The D.O.G.S. Pledge
Devotion, Over-sight, and Grateful Stewardship. Adoption should be a promise, not a temporary mood with fur. If you want the joy of the wag, you embrace the work of the walk.
A dog is not a toy. A dog is a life much like your own -- it feels, it hungers, it gets anxious, it gets rambunctious, and one day it gets old and passes on. You might be having a hard day, and your buddy will most likely sense it. There are still responsibilities that need to get done. That is life. Can you make that commitment? Read each line. Mean it.
- Gratitude I have been chosen by a creature that loves me more than it loves itself. I will act with the gratitude such a gift deserves.
- Reciprocity Unconditional love is a two-way street. My dog gives it freely. I will earn it daily through my patience, my presence, and my actions.
- Reliability There is no such thing as a gross job. Picking up waste and cleaning muddy paws are chances to show my friend that I am reliable.
- Leadership I do not wait for my dog to behave. I lead the way. A dog's behavior is usually a reflection of my own communication and consistency.
- Protection My dog's safety is my duty. I am their eyes, their ears, and their protector in a world they do not fully understand.
- Character A dog is a child's first witness. How I treat my dog when no one is looking is the true measure of my character.
Personal Commitment
On my honor, I recognize that caring for a dog is not a right, but a privilege. I affirm that I will be a guardian, a provider, and a best friend. I promise to live by these words as long as we both shall walk.
